Charitable Activities

One of the original purposes of the Company was for mutual help and charitable work. This continues under various headings.

Trade Considerable effort, as well as funding, goes into Pewter Live and Pewter Review. There is funding for conservation and display of old pewter as well as for research. A 'Millennium Pewter Collection' has been chosen to represent the best of British Pewter at the start of the 21st century. Thanks to a generous donation from MG Ltd, the leading copper brokers in the world, two touring exhibitions in selected locations throughout the UK took place during 2000.

Education The Company was one of the original founders of the City & Guilds of London Institute; it continues to give support and provide a member of the Council. We also provide financial support to students at Dulwich College and the City of London Schools for Boys and for Girls. A recent addition has been a 'failing' school in Islington under the Livery/Schools Links Scheme. This has proved a great success and efforts by the new school staff have resulted in it being removed from the special measures register. This has been aided as much in person as by money and in particular by the great personal interest taken in it by some of our Liverymen.

Youth We support Fairbridge, in its work with aimless young people, the Prince's Youth Trust, the Whirlow Farm Trust, Action Centres UK and Youth Clubs of North Yorkshire.

City Each year we support St Paul's Cathedral and our own parish church of St Vedast-alias-Foster as well as The Lord Mayor's own selected charity.

Medical Our major donation, through our 500th Anniversary Trust, is in support of a research fellow at the Institute of Neurology working on brain disorders, specifically their relationship with heavy metals. We also support hospitals, hospices and mental care work, from specific diseases to general rehabilitation.

General Many other charities receive support. The Company prefers to channel support where a member has an active personal interest in a charity and can provide a link with the Pewterers' Benevolence Trust. Pewterers' Court, an old peoples home in Finchley, was founded by the Company and although it is now run by Finchley Charities, the Company continues to help with the welfare of the residents. Most of the funding comes from Company members, Company funds and past benefactors.

A list of charities to which the Company contributes can be found on the Charities page.
